Lavender roads in Luberon area Dream of Lavender

Cultivated in Roman times to perfume baths and linen, lavender first appeared in Provence in the Middle Ages for its olfactory and medicinal virtues. Lavender cultivation began to develop in the 19th century. Perfumeries in Grasse used fine lavender essential oil to make their elixirs. The lavender roads of the Luberon are a delight for lovers of color and flavor. Perched villages, medieval castles, abbeys & monasteries, vineyards, Roussillon ochres and breathtaking landscapes punctuate the visit. As for lavender, numerous fields, distilleries and museums reveal the secrets of essential oils and the virtues of lavender. It is on blossom from late June to August 15, when Sault celebrates the harvest.
